It’s a song we have all likely heard, a worship song celebrating Jesus and what all he has done for us. It’s a song that resonates with our spirits because it is so full of truth.  Each statement of the song rings true and is something worth pausing and thinking about. A wonderful reminder that Jesus is Lord! We must never take lightly what all He has done for us. Let’s take a look at the marvelous work of Jesus and what that means for us as believers in Christ through this inspired song.

Jesus Paid It All (written by Elvina Hall in 1865 *)

I hear the Savior say,
“Thy strength indeed is small;
Child of weakness, watch and pray,
Find in Me thine all in all.”

This verse first highlights our weakness as human beings on our own. This is an important starting point. We must keep in mind that apart from God we can do nothing. On my own, I am weak. In my own power, I can do little. The bible tells us that it is Jesus who gives us strength to do all that we have to do in this life (Philippians 4:13). Ephesians 6:10 encourages us to be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Our strength and power come from him. In this song, Jesus encourages us as believer’s to come into a deep relationship with him, drawing closer and closer, not only to find strength in Him, but to have our every need met. He wants to be our “all in all.” That means he wants to be our everything. We can be sure that in Him, we have everything we need, in every situation, at all times. All in all.

Refrain:
Jesus paid it all,
All to Him I owe;
Sin had left a crimson stain,
He washed it white as snow.

For nothing good have I
Whereby Thy grace to claim;
I’ll wash my garments white
In the blood of Calv’ry’s Lamb.

The Bible tells us in Romans 3:23 (NLT) that “For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.” Every human being has “crimson stains”, the stains of sin. Stains that separate us from God. By my works alone I could never earn God’s love. I could never earn salvation through my own efforts. 2 Corinthians 5:21(BSB) explains it well, “God made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.” Thank God for Jesus. Jesus “paid it all.” He paid it all. ALL. Think about every sin you have ever done in your whole life and will do. Multiply that by every human that has ever and will ever live on this Earth. Wow. He paid it ALL. He willingly went to the cross for us.  Isaiah 53:5 (NIV) describes it so well, “But he was pierced for our transgressions (our wrongdoing), he was crushed for our iniquities (our sin); the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.” Jesus paid it ALL. We will never be able to grasp how much that really was. It was an amazing act of pure love. Through his sacrifice, I can be washed “white as snow.” Through His blood that was shed, our sins can be forgiven and we can be renewed. Made new, as if we had never sinned. All we have to do is confess Jesus to be our Lord and Savior – accepting what he has done for us already. It’s so simple. Thank you Jesus!

And now complete in Him,
My robe, His righteousness,
Close sheltered ’neath His side,
I am divinely blest.

Lord, now indeed I find
Thy pow’r, and Thine alone,
Can change the *leper’s spots [*leopard’s]
And melt the heart of stone.

We have been made whole, complete in Christ. Colossians 2:10 (NASB) says, “in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority.” All the things you were lacking, all the holes and empty places in your life can now be filled through Jesus. Through salvation in Him, we have been made righteous. When God looks at us, he no longer sees our sin, he sees us with clean, white robes. We have been made righteous- we are now in right standing with God. In Christ we are changed. 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NLT)  says, “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” The “leopard’s spots” can be changed, the heart of stone can melt! Our spirits are made new in Christ. We can also renew our minds to God’s way of thinking through studying his Word, and we can complete the work that God has for us to do. Ephesians 2:10 tells us that “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” 

When from my dying bed
My ransomed soul shall rise,
“Jesus died my soul to save,”
Shall rend the vaulted skies.

Romans 6:23 says “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.” The wages for our sins was death. Our sin was a death sentence. But, as we have seen, Jesus paid it all! He paid our debts with his own blood (1 John 1:7). Our souls are redeemed and we are now holy and clean before God. Our sins are forgiven through Christ’s work which also gives us eternal life. “For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16 NLT).” This earthly body will one day die, but our spirits will live eternally in God’s heavenly kingdom. Our “ransomed souls shall rise” to heaven. Jesus says in John 28:10 (NLT), “I give them eternal life, and they will never perish.” We get to spend eternity in heaven with Jesus!  John 14:2 says that Jesus us preparing a place in heaven just for us. What a beautiful thing. That is how much he loves us.

And when before the throne
I stand in Him complete,
I’ll lay my trophies down,
All down at Jesus’ feet.

Hebrews 9:27 tells us that ” man is appointed to die once, and after that to face judgment.” When our earthly bodies die, we will come before God’s heavenly throne. The Bible tells us that “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil (2 Cortinthians 5:10 ESV).”  As a Christian, this should not scare you. As the song says we will stand before the throne “in Him complete”. We will be standing there covered by the blood of Jesus, dressed in clean, white robes; having been made holy, sanctified, and righteous before God. Jesus will be there interceding for us. Romans 8:34 (NIV) describes it like this, “Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died–more than that, who was raised to life–is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.” Thank you, Jesus! I encourage you to live your best life for God! Seek His will and faithfully serve Him! Let us “run with endurance the race God has set before us (Hebrews 12:1 NLT).” And when we do finally stand before God and Jesus in heaven we can hear the sweet words, “Well done, good and faithful servant (Matthew 25:23 NIV)!”

Pray this prayer with me: “Jesus I confess that you are Lord. I believe in my heart that you died and rose from the dead. Come into my heart. Be my Lord and savior.  Thank you for forgiving all of my sins. Lead me and guide me into a new way of living for you. In Jesus name I pray, Amen. “
