Your God-given power tool: Prayer

Prayer is a powerful tool that God has given to us.

It allows us to connect with God on a personal level; to have a conversation with God, sharing our wants, needs, dreams, hurts, disappointments, and whatever else is on our mind and heart.

Prayer doesn’t have to be formal. There is no perfect time, reason, location, situation, or body position. No formal language or tones needed.  Prayer is simply talking with God.

“Oh Lord, help me get through this day.”

“Lord, I really want to be married and have a family.”

“Lord, I really need a new car.”

“Lord, lead me to a church where I can grow.”

“Help me to find a better job, Lord.”

“Watch over my sister as she goes on vacation this week, Lord.”

“I’ve got the day off today, Lord. How should I spend my time?”

“I’m not feeling good today Lord, heal my body of these symptoms.”

And on, and on….

This communication, talking with God, can become a lifestyle  where we “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17); involving God in our everyday, all day.

Adding scripture to our prayer kicks it up a notch, adding the power of the Word of God. It also builds our faith to believe we will receive what we are praying about. Let’s look at the first prayer shared above.

“Oh Lord, help me get through this day. The Bible says that I am strong in the Lord and in his mighty power (Ephesians 6:10), so I know that in your strength Lord I can get through it. You are with me, and you will never leave me or forsake me (Deuteronomy 31:6)”

By adding in appropriate scripture to our prayer, it has taken it from a desperate plea, to a powerful request resting securely on the foundation of the Word.

But to have  a conversation with anyone implies that the communication goes both ways. So, when you pray, don’t do all the talking. Allow God time and opportunity to respond. I’m not talking about an audible voice talking back to you (although that could happen if God so desired). God will speak to you in your Spirit. He may give direction, guidance, wisdom, or the answers you are seeking. He may bring back something to your memory, or bring up a scripture in your mind, or fill you with his peace.

The Bible has many scriptures on the subject of prayer that help to shed light on it’s importance and power. Becoming familiar with these scriptures will build your faith that God wants to hear from you and  communicate with you. Take a look at these scriptures on prayer.
