Praise! Praising God through the Psalms

Praise is an important part of the Christian life. Psalm 34:1 NLT says “I will praise the LORD at all times. I will constantly speak his praises.” The Bible also speaks of the importance of pairing praise (“thanksgiving”) with prayer. Philippians 4:6 says “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. The Psalms are full of prayers and praises to God. This is a large collection of praises straight from the Psalms, but don’t be overwhelmed. Take one set of scriptures at a time. Read it out loud a few times. Roll it around in your mind and let it sink into your spirit. Incorporate these into your daily life and prayers today. God is good and worthy of our praise!

“I will thank you Lord with all my heart. I will tell of all the marvelous things you have done. I will be filled with joy because of you. I will sing praises to your name O most high.” (Psalm 9:1-2)

“The Earth is the Lord’s and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to him. For he laid the Earth’s foundation on the seas and built it on the ocean depths.” (Psalm 24: 1-2)

“I give honor to the Lord, I give honor to the Lord for his glory and strength. I give honor to the Lord for the glory of his name. I worship you Lord in the splendor of your holiness.” (Psalm 29:2)

“I sing praises to you O Lord my God I will give you thanks for ever.” (Psalm 30:12)

“Let the godly sing with joy to the Lord for it is fitting to praise him. Praise the Lord with melodies on the lyre, make music for him on the 10 stringed harp. Sing new songs of praise to him, play skillfully on the harp and sing with joy. For the word of the Lord holds true and everything he does is worthy of our trust. He loves whatever is just and good and his unfailing love fills the Earth.” (Psalm 33:1-5)

“The Lord merely spoke and the heavens were created. He breathed the word and all the stars were born. He gave the sea its boundary and locked the oceans and vast reservoirs. Let everyone in the world fear the Lord, and let everyone stand in awe of him. For when he spoke the world began, it appeared at his command. “(Psalm 33:6-9)

“I will praise the Lord at all times. I will constantly speak his praises. I will boast only in the Lord, let all who are discouraged to take heart. Come let us tell of the lord’s greatness, let us exalt his name together.” (Psalm 34:1-3)

“Taste and see that the Lord is good. O the joys of those who trust in him.” (Psalm 34:8)

“Your unfailing love O Lord is as vast as the heavens, and your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds. Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your justice like the ocean depths. You care for people and animals alike, O Lord. How precious is your unfailing love O God! All humanity finds shelter in the shadow of your wings. You feed them from the abundance of your own house, letting them drink from your rivers of delight. For you are the fountain of life, the light by which we see. ” (Psalm 36:5-9)

“I clap my hands with joy! I shout to God with joyful praise! For the Lord most high is awesome. He is the great king of all the Earth. He subdues the nation’s before me putting my enemies beneath my feet.” (Psalm 47:1-3)

“O God, I meditate on your unfailing love as I worship in your temple. As your name deserves, O God, you will be praised to the ends of the Earth! Your strong right hand is filled with victory.” (Psalm 48:9-10)

“My heart is confident in you, O God my heart is confident. No wonder I can sing your praises! Wake up, my heart! Wake up, O lyre and harp! I will wake the dawn with my song. I will thank you, Lord, among all the people. I will sing your praises among the nations. For your unfailing love is as high as the heavens. Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. Be exalted, O God, above the highest heavens. May your glory shine over all the Earth!”               (Psalm 57:7-11)

“But as for me, I will sing about your power. I will shout with joy each morning because of your unfailing love. For you have been my refuge, a place of safety in the day of distress. O my strength, to you  I sing praises, for you, O God, are my refuge, the God who shows me unfailing love. ” (Psalm 59:16-17)

Power, O God, belongs to you. Unfailing love, O Lord, is yours.” (Psalm 62:11-12)

“Shout joyful praises to God, all the Earth! Sing about the glory of his name! Tell the world how glorious he is. Say to God, “how awesome are your deeds!” Your enemies cringe before your mighty power. Everything on Earth will worship you, they will sing your praises, shouting your name in glorious songs!” (Psalm 66:1-4)

“Come and see what our God has done, what awesome miracles he does for his people! He made a dry path through the Red Sea, and his people went across on foot. Come, let us rejoice in who he is. For by his great power he rules forever. He watches every movement of the nations; let no rebel rise in defiance. Let the whole world bless our God and sing aloud his praises. Our lives are in his hands, and he keeps our feet from stumbling. ” (Psalm 66:5-9)

“Praise the Lord, praise God our savior! For each day he carries us in his arms. Our God is a God who saves! The sovereign Lord rescues us from death. Our God is a God who saves! The sovereign Lord rescues us from death. “(Psalm 68:19-20)

“Sing to God, you kingdoms of the Earth. Sing praises to the Lord. Sing to the one who rides across the ancient heavens, his mighty voice thundering from the sky. Tell everyone about God’s power. His majesty shines down on Israel, his strength is mighty in the heavens. God is awesome in his sanctuary. The God of Israel gives power and strength to his people. Praise be to God!” (Psalm 68:32-35)

“Your righteousness, O God, reaches to the highest heavens. You have done such wonderful things. Who can compare with you, O God?… I will praise you with music on the harp, because you are faithful to your promises, God. I will sing for you with a lyre, O holy one. I will shout for joy and sing your praises for you have redeemed me. I will tell about your righteous deeds all day long!” (Psalm 71:19, 22-24)

“We thank you, O God! We give thanks because you are near. People everywhere tell your mighty miracles. ” (Psalm 75:1)

“All the nations, and you made each one, will come and bow before you. They will praise your great and holy name. For you are great and perform great miracles. You alone are God! With all my heart I will praise you, O Lord my God. I will give glory to your name for ever!” (Psalm 86:9-10,12)

“All heaven will praise your miracles, Lord; myriads of angels will praise your for your faithfulness. For who in all of heaven can compare with the Lord? What mightiest angel is anything like the Lord? The highest angelic powers stand in awe of God. He is far more awesome than those who surround his throne. O Lord God Almighty! Where is there anyone as might as you, Lord? Faithfulness is your very character. You are the one who rules the oceans. When their waves rise in fearful storms, you subdue them. You are the one who crushed the great sea monster. You scattered your enemies with your might arm. The heavens are yours, and the earth is yours; everything in the world is yours – you created it all. You created north and south, Mount Tabor and Mount Hermon praise your name. Powerful is your arm! Strong is your hand! Your right  hand is lifted high in glorious strength. Your throne is founded on two strong pillars – righteousness and justice. Unfailing love and truth walk before you as attendants.” (Psalm 89: 5-14)

“It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to the most high. It is good to proclaim your unfailing love in the morning, and your faithfulness in the evening. You thrill me, Lord, with all you have done for me! I sing for joy because of what you have done. O Lord, what great miracles you do, and how deep are your thoughts. You are exalted in the heavens, you,O Lord, continue forever.” (Psalm 92:1-6)

“The Lord is king! He is robed in majesty. Indeed, the Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength. The world is firmly established, it cannot be shaken. Your throne, O Lord, has been established from time immemorial. You, yourself, are from the everlasting past… The nature of your reign, O Lord, is holiness forever.” (Psalm 93:1-2,5)

“Come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us give a joyous shout to the rock of our salvation! Let us come before him with Thanksgiving. Let us sing him psalms of praise. For the Lord is a great God, the great king above all gods. He owns the depths of the Earth, and even the mightiest mountains are his. The sea belongs to him, for he made it. His hands formed the dry land too. Come, let us worship and bow down. Let us kneel before the Lord our maker, for he is our God. We are the people he watches over, the sheep under his care.” (Psalm 95:1-7)

“Sing a new song to the Lord! Let the whole Earth sing to the Lord! Sing to the Lord, bless his name. Each day proclaim the good news that he saves. Publish his glorious deeds among the nations. Tell everyone about the amazing things he does. Great is the Lord! He is most worthy of praise! He is to be revered above all the gods. The gods of other nations are merely idols, but the Lord made the heavens! Honor and majesty surround him. Strength and beauty are in his sanctuary. O nations of the world, recognize the Lord. Recognize that the Lord is glorious and strong. Give to the Lord the glory he deserves! Bring your offering and come to worship him. Worship the Lord in all his holy splendor.” (Psalm 96: 1-9)

“Sing a new song to the Lord, for he has done wonderful deeds. He has won a mighty victory by his power and holiness. Shout to the Lord all the Earth, break out in praise and sing for joy! Sing your praise to the Lord with the harp, with the harp and melodious song, with trumpets and the sound of the ram’s horn. Make a joyful symphony before the Lord, the king! Let the sea and everything in it shout his praise! Let the Earth and all living things join in. Let the rivers clap their hands in glee! Let the hills sing out their songs of joy before the Lord.” (Psalm 98: 1-8)

“Shout with joy to the Lord, O Earth! Worship the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing with joy. Acknowledge that the Lord is God! He made us, and we are his. We are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and bless his name. For the Lord is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and his faithfulness continues to each generation. ” (Psalm 100)

“Praise the Lord, I tell myself. O Lord my God, how great you are! You are robed with honor and with majesty, you are dressed in a robe of a light… May the glory of the Lord last forever! The Lord rejoices in all he has made! The Earth trembles at his glance, the mountains burst into flame at his touch. I will sing to the Lord as long as I live. I will praise my God to my last breath! May he be pleased by all these thoughts about him, for I rejoice in the Lord.” (Psalm 104: 1-2, 31-33)

“Praise the Lord! Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever. Who can list the glorious miracles of the Lord? Who can ever praise him half enough?… Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Let all the people say, “Amen!” Praise the Lord!” (Psalm 106:1, 48)

“Praise the Lord, all you nations. Praise him, all you people of the Earth. For he loves us with unfailing love, the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord!” (Psalm 117)

“You are my God, and I will praise you! You are my God, and I will exalt you! Give thanks to the Lord for he is good! His faithful loves endures forever. ” (Psalm 118: 28-29)

“I give thanks to the Lord for he is good! I give thanks to the God of gods. I give thanks to the Lord of lords. I give thanks to him who alone does mighty miracles. I give thanks to him who made the heavens so skillfully. I give thanks to him who placed the Earth on the water. I give thanks to him who made the heavenly lights, the Sun to rule the day and the moon and stars to rule the night. I give thanks to the God of heaven. His faithful love endures for ever.” (Psalm 136:1-9)

“I will praise you, my God and king, and bless your name for ever and ever. I will bless you every day, and I will praise you forever. Great is the Lord! He is most worthy of praise! His greatness is beyond discovery! Let each generation tell its children of your mighty acts. I will meditate on your Majestic, glorious splendor, and your wonderful miracles. Your awe- inspiring deeds will be on every tongue, and I will proclaim your greatness. Everyone will share the story of your wonderful goodness, they will sing with joy of your righteousness.”  (Psalm 145: 1-7)

“The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to get angry, full of unfailing love. The Lord is good to everyone. He showers compassion on all his creation. All of your works will thank you Lord, and your faithful followers will bless you…The Lord is faithful in all he says, he is gracious in all he does… The Lord is righteous in everything he does, and he is filled with kindness… I will praise the Lord, and everyone on Earth will bless his holy name forever and ever!” (Psalm 145:8-10,13,17, 21)

“Praise the Lord from the heavens! Praise him from the skies! Praise him, all his angels! Praise him, all the armies of heaven! Praise him, Sun and moon! Praise him, all you twinkling stars! Praise him, skies above! Praise him, vapors high above the clouds! Let every created thing give praise to the Lord, for he issued his command, and they came into being. He established them forever and forever. His orders will never be revoked. Praise him all the Earth and everything in it. Let them all praise the name of the Lord. For his name is very great, his glory towers over the Earth and heaven!” (Psalm 149:1-6, 13)

“Praise God in his heavenly dwelling, praise him in his mighty heaven! Praise him for his mighty works, praise his unequaled greatness! Praise him with a blast of the trumpet, praise him with a lyre and harp! Praise him with a tambourine and dancing, praise him with stringed instruments and flutes! Praise him with a clash of cymbals, praise him with a loud clanging cymbal. Let everything that lives sing praises to the Lord! Praise the Lord” (Psalm 150)
